Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs focuses on fisheries productivity
Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has reaffirmed that its six national priority programs in the marine and fisheries sector are designed to boost community productivity and welfare rather than focusing solely on physical infrastructure.
Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated during an internal consolidation in Jakarta that these programs must be driven by the actual needs of people in the field. He emphasized that improving living standards requires increasing economic productivity rather than just repairing housing.
A key example provided was the development of the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP). Using a model applied in Biak, the ministry focuses on mapping community needs first. This approach includes building essential economic support facilities such as fuel stations for fishermen, ice factories, cold storage, workshops, and culinary facilities to ensure sustainable economic growth for coastal communities.
