Indonesia's MSME Ministry launches entrepreneurship program in West Kalimantan

The Indonesian Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has introduced the Bursa Wirausaha Unggulan (BWU) program at Tanjungpura University in Pontianak to stimulate entrepreneurship in West Kalimantan. The initiative aims to connect 1,000 students, university-supported MSMEs, incubator institutions, and novice entrepreneurs with business development services to build a productive regional ecosystem.

Minister of MSME Maman Abdurrahman emphasized that the program seeks to transform employment challenges into opportunities for new business growth. This move addresses significant labor issues in the region, where approximately 139,000 residents are currently unemployed. Additionally, West Kalimantan's 77 higher education institutions produce roughly 32,000 graduates annually, whom the Minister encourages to become job creators rather than mere job seekers.

The program also serves to support the economic recovery of MSMEs affected by forest and land fires. Beyond academic initiatives, the Ministry is working to expand market access for local businesses, including facilitating partnerships between local brands and retail networks, as well as coordinating between the West Kalimantan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and the LLP-KUKM.
