Indonesia's Islamic Congress KUII VIII Calls for Anti‑Corruption Task Force, Zakat Tax Credit, and Strengthening Syariah

The Kongres Umat Islam Indonesia (KUII) VIII convened at Hotel Bidakara in Jakarta from 24 to 26 July 2026. Delegates adopted eleven strategic recommendations that call for re‑actualising the Pancasila and syariah economies, establishing a state‑level syariah economic body, strengthening cooperatives, UMKM, pesantren, agrarian reform, technology sovereignty and bureaucratic reforms.

Komisi D of the congress urged the government to form a special task force to investigate alleged corruption involving former special prosecutor Febrie Adriansyah. The Media and Cyber Commission highlighted the spread of fake news, low digital literacy, online buzzers and hate speech, recommending stronger regulation and protection for journalists.

MUI proposed that zakat payments be treated as a direct tax credit rather than merely a tax deduction, arguing the current system imposes a double‑tax burden on Muslims. MUI also reiterated support for Palestinian independence and rejected genocide and Islamophobia. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar called on Muslims to back President Prabowo Subianto’s priority programs and warned against non‑military threats such as atheism, LGBT propaganda, gambling and online gambling. He noted Indonesia’s macro‑economic stability with inflation around 1‑2 % and growth of about 5.2 % and urged greater literacy of the syariah economy.
