Indonesia's MUI pushes draft criminal law against LGBT to parliament

The Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) is finalising an academic paper and a draft Criminal Code amendment targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. The draft will be submitted to the DPR's National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) for consideration. MUI Vice‑Chair KH M. Cholil Nafis said moral appeals are no longer sufficient and that the legislation is intended to “bring people back to their nature.”

DPR Vice‑Chair Saan Mustopa confirmed that any proposal entering the Prolegnas will be examined through the House’s legislative bodies, including the Bill Drafting Agency and specialist committees, before any further action is taken.
