Indonesia's Parliament Delays Election Law Revision Awaiting Party Leaders' Approval

The House of Representatives' Commission II said that formal discussion of the draft amendment to the 2017 Election Law cannot begin because it still lacks the green light from the chairpersons of political parties. Chairperson Muhammad Rifqinizamy Karsayuda noted that party leadership approval is a prerequisite for legislators to move forward, and that a working committee has not yet been formed. He warned that further postponement could clash with critical steps of the 2026 electoral cycle, including the selection of KPU members in October 2026.

Separately, a law student from UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung filed a constitutional review petition seeking to impose term limits on members of the DPR, DPD, provincial and local legislative bodies. The petitioner argues that the absence of limits enables incumbent dominance and hampers political regeneration, and asks the Constitutional Court to mandate legislation that caps legislative terms.
