Indonesia's Parliament proposes AI tools and residency reforms to tackle doctor shortage

DPR Vice‑Chair Nihayatul Wafiroh said the House will explore artificial‑intelligence applications to give patients in remote Indonesian regions a preliminary health analysis when doctors are unavailable. The proposal was presented at a Working Meeting of Commission IX with the Health Ministry on 25 June 2026.

At the same time, Commission X member Adela Kanasya Adies urged that the accelerated hospital‑based specialist residency programme must retain rigorous clinical teaching and diverse case exposure. She warned that expanding specialist training should not compromise graduate competence, and that graduates should serve in underserved areas. The remarks were made during a hearing on 23 June 2026.

Both initiatives aim to improve access to specialist medical care across Indonesia’s underserved regions.
