Indonesia's PDIP Marks 30 Years Since Kudatuli Tragedy
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) commemorated the 30th anniversary of the 27 July 1996 Kudatuli incident with a series of events across the country. On 26‑27 July 2026 theatrical reenactments of the office assault were staged at the PDIP headquarters in Jakarta, in Sidoarjo, Surabaya, West Java, Yogyakarta and other locations.
Speeches by party leaders—including Secretary‑General Hasto Kristiyanto, West Java DPD chair Ono Surono, and regional heads—linked the tragedy to the broader struggle for democracy and warned against repeating authoritarian repression. Megawati Soekarnoputri is scheduled to inaugurate a permanent monument to the victims at the party’s Jakarta office on 27 July. Community activities such as a “Panggung Rakyat” in Yogyakarta, distribution of 500 food packages in Jogja, and dialogues with survivors were also held. The commemorations stressed the need to preserve democratic freedoms, remember the repression of the Suharto era, and keep the memory of Kudatuli alive for future generations.
