Indonesia's pesantren students confront intimidation and inadequate nutrition
Authorities in West Sumatra have been alerted to alleged intimidation of santri at Pondok Pesantren Berbasis Surau (PBS) Ibnu Haromain in Kapur IX, Lima Puluh Kota. Advocates argue the incident breaches the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom (Article 28E) and the 2014 Child Protection Law, calling for state intervention to safeguard students' rights.
Separate reports highlight chronic under‑nutrition in many pesantren across Indonesia. Daily meals often consist of rice, tempe, limited tofu and occasional egg or chicken, with scarce protein and dairy. Experts stress that such diets can impair neurotransmitter production and brain development in adolescents aged 12‑18, undermining their capacity to learn and future contributions to the nation.
