Indonesia Advances Hydrogen Buses for TransJakarta with Pilot Rollouts

Indonesia is accelerating the use of hydrogen as a clean transport fuel. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and state utilities PT PLN and PT Pertamina have launched a pilot dual‑fuel bus that runs on diesel and hydrogen, and installed a 194‑km green‑hydrogen corridor linking Jakarta, Karawang and Pat. The pilot bus, modified from a Perum DAMRI diesel vehicle, is expected to cut emissions by up to 58% for opacity and over 30% for CO₂.

PT Pertamina’s first green‑hydrogen plant at the Ulubelu geothermal power site in Lampung is slated to begin commercial operation in November 2026, producing 80‑100 kg of hydrogen per day. Surplus hydrogen from PLN’s power plants – about 130 tonnes annually – is earmarked for fueling public transport. The government is urging the DKI Jakarta governor to adopt hydrogen‑powered buses for the TransJakarta fleet, with discussions underway with manufacturers from Japan, Germany and China to supply suitable vehicles.
