Indonesia's processed tuna to enter Japan tariff‑free under revised IJEPA

From 1 August 2026, Indonesia’s processed tuna and skipjack products will enjoy a 0 % preferential tariff when exported to Japan under the amended Indonesia‑Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA). Eleven Indonesian fish‑processing firms have been approved as the first beneficiaries, replacing the previous 9.6 % most‑favoured‑nation duty. The tariff‑free rate covers four HS codes, including skipjack and bonito in airtight packaging, dried boiled skipjack and bonito, and frozen cooked tuna.

Indonesia’s fishery exports to Japan totalled US$613.65 million in 2025, with processed tuna accounting for US$76.41 million – a 21 % rise from the prior year. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries highlighted the need to strengthen the upstream supply chain, urging traceable, responsibly caught tuna, rapid on‑board handling, cold‑chain logistics, and proper port processing. KKP Director General Lotharia Latif stressed that sustainable catch limits and training for fishers are essential to sustain the new market access.

The policy follows the ratification of an IJEPA amendment through Presidential Regulation No 32/2026, and further registration rounds are planned to extend benefits to more exporters.
