Indonesia's QRIS usage rises, 65% of North Kalimantan public sector now digital
Bank Indonesia reported that 65 percent of public‑sector entities in North Kalimantan have adopted the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) for cash‑less transactions. The remaining 35 percent of non‑cash payments are processed through other channels such as bank transfers and ATMs, with younger users preferring QRIS via smartphones.
Nationwide, QRIS has reached 63 million users and more than 45 million merchants, the majority of them micro, small and medium enterprises. Bank Indonesia projects total QRIS transaction volume to hit 17 billion by the end of 2026 as part of its broader digitalisation programme. The rapid uptake is seen as a sign of growing digital payment acceptance in both government services and the private sector.
These developments are occurring alongside a slowdown in the weighted average loan‑to‑deposit ratio for banks, yet foreign investors continue to buy shares of Indonesia’s large banks, underscoring confidence in the country’s financial system.
