Indonesia's rice reserves reach record 5.3 million tonnes, officials say no shortage
Indonesia's national rice reserves have risen to a historic 5.3 million tonnes, surpassing the capacity of the state‑owned grain warehouse Bulog (3 million tonnes) and prompting the government to lease additional storage space. Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) and Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman told reporters that the stock is “very strong” and warned, “Beras kita melimpah. Jangan mempermainkan di lapangan… Tidak ada yang langka,” urging traders not to manipulate prices.
The agency has deployed a food‑security task force (Satgas Pangan) to monitor distribution and maintain price stability. Indonesia’s production, reported by the USDA Rice Outlook, exceeds 30 million tonnes annually, making it one of the top growers alongside Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Vietnam. Officials say the surplus eliminates any risk of shortage and supports the country's self‑sufficiency goals.
