Indonesia announces UN Security Council candidacy and Palestinian support
At the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono officially announced Indonesia's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. The campaign, themed ‘Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace’, focuses on strengthening trust in the multilateral system, promoting international law, and increasing the effectiveness and inclusivity of the Security Council.
Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia's unwavering support for Palestinian independence through a two-state solution, describing the ongoing situation in Gaza and the West Bank as a critical test for international principles and human conscience. To support humanitarian efforts, Indonesia committed USD 1.2 million (approximately Rp 21.4 billion) to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
Additionally, the Foreign Minister emphasized Indonesia's long-standing role in global peace, noting its significant contributions to UN peacekeeping missions since 1957, including two decades of service in Lebanon. He also highlighted the importance of national resilience, specifically in food and energy security, as a foundation for contributing to global stability.
