Indoor air quality management through allergen and chemical control
Maintaining healthy indoor air quality involves managing allergens, chemical exposure, and ventilation systems. Common indoor pollutants include dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, and pollen, which can exacerbate asthma and respiratory issues. In humid climates, moisture control is particularly vital to prevent mold growth.
Chemical exposure is another significant factor. A 2023 study by the Environmental Working Group found that conventional cleaning products can emit hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with an average of 22 hazardous VOCs per product. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that indoor VOC levels are typically two to ten times higher than outdoor levels, potentially causing respiratory irritation, headaches, and long-term health issues.
Effective management strategies include:
• Regular HVAC maintenance and air duct cleaning to remove accumulated debris and improve energy efficiency.
• Frequent washing of bedding in hot water and using allergen-proof covers.
• Switching to non-toxic or “green” cleaning products to reduce the daily layering of hazardous chemicals.
• Utilizing air filters, noting that while disposable filters contribute to landfill waste, they can improve HVAC efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Washable filters serve as a more eco-friendly alternative.
