Indoor air quality perception in Romania reveals health gaps
A recent study titled ‘Barometrului Aerului din Casele Românilor 2026’, initiated by Ecovent, reveals a significant gap between how Romanians perceive their indoor air quality and their actual physical symptoms. While 86% of respondents believe the air in their homes is as clean as, or cleaner than, outdoor air, 43% report experiencing health issues such as allergies, respiratory problems, skin irritation, fatigue, or headaches.
Many residents tend to attribute these symptoms to stress or daily exhaustion rather than their living environment. This perception contrasts with data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which notes that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
Maintaining proper indoor conditions is also linked to humidity levels. Experts recommend a relative humidity range between 40% and 60% to ensure comfort and health. Levels below 30% in winter can cause respiratory irritation and dry skin, while levels exceeding 60% in summer increase the risk of mold, condensation, and unpleasant odors.
