Indoor and winter gardening options for seasonal cultivation

Gardening activities can be extended into the fall and winter months through indoor cultivation and the selection of cold-hardy plant species.

Indoor gardening, such as using windowsills and pots, offers children opportunities for meaningful work and observation of natural transformations. This approach aligns with Montessori principles by providing real tasks, such as watering, measuring, and caring for living things that change at their own pace.

For outdoor or greenhouse gardening, various plants are capable of blooming during winter months. Notable options include hellebores, such as the Christmas rose and Lenten rose, as well as certain camellia cultivars like ‘Yuletide’. The US National Arboretum has also engaged in breeding programs to develop extremely cold-hardy camellias.
