Indoor plant care: Addressing yellowing leaves and improper placement

Maintaining healthy indoor plants requires monitoring both watering habits and environmental placement. For Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plants), yellowing leaves are most commonly caused by overwatering rather than neglect. Because these plants store water in thick underground rhizomes, excessive moisture can lead to root rot. If soil remains wet, it is recommended to check for drainage and, in cases of rot, repot the plant in fresh, well-draining substrate.

Other factors contributing to plant decline include natural aging of older leaves and insufficient light. Additionally, improper placement within a home can be detrimental. Experts advise avoiding locations near air conditioning vents, heaters, or fireplaces, as extreme temperatures and drafts can rapidly dehydrate plants. Placing tropical plants near drafty entrance doors or against cold window glass during winter can also cause significant stress and damage.
