Maintaining indoor plants during the darker months requires specific care routines to ensure health and growth. Experts suggest that dust accumulation on leaves can hinder photosynthesis by blocking light. To prevent this, the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland recommends monthly dusting with a soft, damp cloth, particularly for large-leaved plants. The Industrieverband Agrar (IVA) also suggests rinsing plants in a shower with lukewarm water, provided the plant can tolerate it and the root ball is protected.

When selecting plants for winter gardens, temperature control is the deciding factor. Heated winter gardens are suitable for tropical and subtropical species such as palms, Monstera, and orchids. Conversely, moderately heated or unheated winter gardens with temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius are ideal for Mediterranean plants like citrus, oleander, olive, and laurel. It is essential to match light levels with temperature, as warmer environments require more light to prevent plant decline.
