Indoor plant health: Addressing humidity and watering errors

Common issues with indoor plants, such as brown and dry leaf tips, are often caused by low environmental humidity rather than insufficient watering. Experts note that while many assume dry leaves signal a need for more water, the problem is frequently the dry air caused by indoor heating systems.

To maintain healthy plants, especially tropical species that thrive in humidity levels above 70 percent, several methods can be used to improve the microclimate. These include grouping plants together to encourage natural transpiration, using humidifiers, or placing pots on trays filled with pebbles and water to increase evaporation.

Additionally, improper watering techniques can damage plants. Common errors include following a strict calendar instead of checking soil moisture, watering only the surface without reaching the roots, and leaving water accumulated in drainage saucers, which can lead to root issues.
