Indoor plants for home aesthetics and air quality
Indoor plants can enhance home aesthetics by adding color, texture, and a connection to nature. While a NASA study in the late 1980s suggested certain plants could absorb pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde, experts note that a few potted plants are not a reliable method for significantly cleaning air in ordinary homes.
For pet owners, selecting non-toxic varieties is essential. Dog-friendly options include spider plants, which are resilient and can remove formaldehyde and xylene; Boston ferns, which thrive in humid environments; Areca palms, which offer a tropical aesthetic; and Calathea, known for its colorful leaf patterns.
Other popular varieties include the peace lily, which features deep green leaves and white blooms and adapts well to low-light conditions. However, peace lilies are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
