Indore Police cite Verma Commission for Rahul Gandhi security

Indore Police have issued a 29-point security requirement document to the Congress party regarding Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Indore. The document cites the Justice JS Verma Commission report, which was established to investigate security lapses following the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The police stated that because Rahul Gandhi holds Z-plus security, the standards outlined in the commission’s findings must be applied to the event. The requirements include specific details on venue logistics, such as barricading, stage specifications, medical facilities, and electricity, as well as information regarding the expected number of attendees and volunteers.

The reference to the Verma Commission has triggered a political dispute. The Congress party has questioned the appropriateness of invoking the 1991 assassination in a routine security document for a political event. Meanwhile, the BJP has suggested that the Congress party failed to provide sufficient information regarding the event's arrangements.
