Indore water crisis: Inquiry confirms sewage contamination caused deaths
A judicial inquiry commission has confirmed that sewage water contaminated the drinking water supply in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore, leading to significant health issues and deaths. The commission, led by former Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Sushil Kumar Gupta, reported that the contamination occurred because sewage entered the drinking water pipelines, rendering the water unfit for human consumption.
Of the 36 deaths examined by the commission, 22 were determined to be directly related to the contaminated water. The report, which was submitted to the High Court in August, also highlighted administrative and technical failures.
Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Umang Singhar has criticized the government following the report's findings. Singhar raised concerns regarding the disappearance of critical engineering documents, such as layout plans and design drawings, which were not provided to the commission. He also pointed to administrative delays, claiming a file related to sewage infrastructure remained pending for 66 days awaiting the mayor's signature.
