Dominican Republic advances digital infrastructure and AI integration
The Dominican Republic is advancing its digital and technological infrastructure through several key initiatives. The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has secured approximately RD$44 million in technical assistance from Swedfund, a Swedish development finance institution. These funds will support the creation of a Master Plan for radio spectrum management for 2027–2031 and the regulation of satellite services.
In the realm of social inclusion, Indotel is promoting the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools to create more accessible smart cities. The agency announced RD$7.1 million in support for the Francina Foundation to strengthen accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.
Educational and institutional developments are also underway. President Luis Abinader has proposed converting the former Randa International commercial plaza into a technological campus for the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA) to expand access to software development, AI, and cybersecurity training. Additionally, the National Police, through the Higher Police Education Institute (IPES), is incorporating geopolitics and AI into its academic curriculum to address modern security challenges.
