Indra and Santa Bárbara Sistemas negotiate defense alliance

Indra and Santa Bárbara Sistemas, two major Spanish defense companies, are negotiating a potential industrial alliance following months of legal tension and competition. The companies are reportedly studying a joint venture between Indra Land Vehicles and Santa Bárbara, with a possible ownership split of 51% for Indra and 49% for Santa Bárbara.

The shift toward cooperation follows a period of friction, particularly regarding the Ministry of Defense's adjudication of self-propelled artillery programs valued at approximately 7.2 billion euros. While Santa Bárbara had previously challenged these awards in court, the new leadership at Indra, including President Ángel Simón and CEO Josep María Recasens, has moved toward a more conciliatory tone to ensure manufacturing capacity and meet delivery deadlines.

Separately, Santa Bárbara Sistemas is marking the centenary of the Trubia 1, the first fully Spanish-made tank, with an exhibition in Gijón. The company remains a key pillar of the Spanish Armed Forces, currently developing the Dragón and Pizarro systems.
