Indra develops augmented reality system for transparent tank armor
Indra has developed an augmented reality system designed to provide tank crews with ‘transparent armor.’ By using advanced augmented reality glasses, the technology allows personnel to see through the vehicle's armored structure, providing a continuous, coherent, and real-time 360-degree view of the exterior.
This system replaces traditional periscopes, viewers, and small internal screens by projecting images captured by vehicle cameras directly into the operator's field of vision. The interface integrates data from the vehicle's mission system to enhance situational awareness, which is particularly beneficial in complex environments such as urban combat zones.
The technology is designed to reduce the cognitive workload of the crew by adapting information to specific roles, such as the driver, vehicle commander, or gunner. This helps facilitate decision-making during high-stress or high-fatigue scenarios. Indra's goal is to lead the digitalization of the next generation of tanks in Europe, transforming armored vehicles into connected, intelligent nodes within a larger network.
