Indraprastha Gas Limited launches AI system for CNG safety

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has launched an Automated Vehicle Verification System at ten CNG retail outlets in Delhi to enhance cylinder safety. The AI-powered system is designed to detect expired or invalid CNG cylinder hydro-test certifications by cross-referencing vehicle registration plates with the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) online database.

At participating stations, high-resolution cameras capture vehicle registration numbers as they enter the forecourt. An artificial intelligence application then processes these details to confirm the link between the vehicle and its cylinder compliance records. If a vehicle is found to be non-compliant, real-time alerts are triggered via handheld terminals, digital LED boards, and public address systems to prevent the dispensing of fuel.

While the automated system aims to reduce reliance on manual oversight and provide centralized monitoring, IGL will continue to conduct manual safety inspections. Staff will still verify paper certificates and officers will perform field inspections to ensure all safety standards are met.
