Industrial chicken farming drives global spread of Campylobacter
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analysed nearly 2,800 bacterial genomes from chickens and wild birds collected in 30 countries between 1979 and 2024. It found that the worldwide expansion of intensive poultry production has increased the transmission of the bacterium Campylobacter by more than 100 times. Since the 1960s, global chicken numbers have risen seven‑fold to roughly 31 billion birds, now representing about 70 % of all bird biomass.
Campylobacter is the most common bacterial cause of diarrhoeal disease worldwide; 60‑80 % of human infections are traced to poultry. The study also documented a rise in antimicrobial‑resistance traits among circulating strains, raising concerns that severe cases will become harder to treat. Professor Sam Sheppard of the University of Oxford, senior author of the paper, said the intensification of chicken farming has created a “cauldron of bacterial evolution” that turns farms into ecological “pathogen sponges.” The findings highlight a public‑health risk linked to the rapid growth of the global chicken industry.
