Industrial fires cause business shutdowns and environmental damage in NZ and UK

Two separate industrial fires have caused operational disruptions and environmental concerns in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In New Zealand, a fire broke out at a boiler shed belonging to Value Proteins Ltd, a commercial pet meal manufacturing business within the Gloriavale community near Haupiri. While the fire caused structural damage and a temporary shutdown of the rendering plant, company directors reported that safety protocols were activated and no injuries occurred. WorkSafe New Zealand has been notified and is investigating the cause of the blaze.

In the United Kingdom, a fire at Sachets, a cleaning product manufacturer in Oldham, resulted in significant environmental damage. Firefighting foam and runoff from the River Tame and Huddersfield Narrow Canal bypassed containment measures, leading to the deaths of several hundred fish. The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation as foam disperses downstream, and officers continue to assess the ongoing impact on the local ecosystem.
