Industrial pollution and toxic waste trigger environmental concerns in Mozambique and Brazil

Reports from Mozambique and Brazil highlight ongoing environmental and health crises caused by industrial waste. In the Dondo district of Mozambique, residents have denounced an allegedly illegal fuel production unit for dumping toxic waste, including improper oils, onto agricultural land. This activity has caused foul odors and soil contamination risks for local farmers. A recent fire in the waste accumulation area spread to a neighboring property, causing concern among local workers. State environmental authorities have confirmed they are investigating the matter to hold those responsible accountable.

In Santo Amaro, Brazil, long-term residents and former employees are facing the health consequences of lead contamination left by a factory that operated for over three decades. The Companhia Brasileira de Chumbo (Cobrac) processed ore and produced approximately 500,000 tons of slag containing high concentrations of lead. Former workers report chronic health issues, such as saturnism, while residents face environmental damage. Victims are currently seeking compensation and remediation for the decades of exposure to toxic dust and residues.
