Industry experts see no immediate demand for 8K video formats

Industry experts suggest that 8K resolution is unlikely to see a major commercial rollout in the near future for physical media or digital downloads. During a discussion marking the tenth anniversary of UHD Blu-ray, leaders from the Blu-ray Disc Association, Magnetar, and Kaleidescape indicated that there is currently no significant demand from content creators or consumers for an 8K format.

Victor Matsuda, Vice President of Visual Entertainment at Sony Corporation and Chair of the Global Promotions Committee at the Blu-ray Disc Association, stated that the association is not working on a commercial 8K disc format. He noted that stakeholders appear satisfied with the current Ultra HD Blu-ray offerings, leaving no immediate driving reason to develop new 8K standards for prerecorded entertainment.
