Industry leaders reach consensus on NPO standards at Shenzhen summit

Industry leaders reached a consensus on international standards for near-packaged optics (NPO) during the NPO Standards Industry Summit held at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. Co-hosted by IPEC and OIF, the summit included participation from major companies in China, the United States, and Japan, including Huawei, Broadcom, Tencent, Alibaba Cloud, and Baidu.

The agreement aims to accelerate the commercial adoption of NPO technology and establish a global standards ecosystem. Experts noted that NPO is expected to become a preferred solution for SuperPoD interconnects due to its energy efficiency, port density advantages, and compatibility with existing pluggable ecosystems. This positioning serves as a potential alternative or complement to co-packaged optics (CPO), which faces challenges regarding closed industry chains and complex maintenance.
