IndyCar and Shell to debut updated renewable fuel in 2027

IndyCar and Shell have announced an updated formulation of Shell’s 100% Renewable Race Fuel, set to be introduced for the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series season. The new fuel will incorporate a significant portion of renewable ethanol sourced domestically from Indiana, produced from the waste stream of a grain mixture-based distilling process.

The updated formulation is expected to deliver at least a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the Renewable Fuel Standard average gasoline baseline. The change is described as a ‘drop-in’ transition, meaning engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda should require little to no adjustments to utilize the new formula.

This initiative builds upon the renewable fuel program launched in 2023. By sourcing feedstock from Indiana, the program aims to connect the state's agricultural industry with its motorsports heritage.
