INDYCAR begins first oval testing for new IR-28 chassis

Alexander Rossi has completed the first oval test of the INDYCAR SERIES’ next-generation IR-28 chassis at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This testing phase marks a significant step in the development of the new car scheduled for use in 2028.

Designed to be lighter than the current model, the IR-28 features revised aerodynamics intended to improve stability and minimize the disadvantage of following other vehicles closely. During the test, Rossi represented Chevrolet teams, while Alex Palou represented Honda teams.

Mike O’Gara, INDYCAR’s vice president of Competition and Race Engineering, noted that the car performed as expected, with Rossi appearing comfortable at full throttle without significant setup changes. The session focused on gathering data regarding how the chassis responds to the unique demands of oval racing.
