IndyCar Markham race faces delays after track construction failures

The inaugural IndyCar race at the new Markham street circuit in Ontario, Canada, faced significant logistical issues when Friday's practice sessions were cancelled due to incomplete track construction. Race promoter Green Savoree Racing Promotions failed to finish building the temporary course on time, leaving essential features like safety fencing, pedestrian bridges, and barrier systems unfinished. IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles expressed extreme disappointment, noting that the organization had provided significant support to the promoter despite the failure to meet deadlines.

Following the delays, the schedule was compressed, moving practice and qualifying to Saturday. The qualifying session was marked by several red flags caused by incidents involving drivers such as Will Power, Josef Newgarden, and Alex Palou. Championship leader Alex Palou suffered a setback after hitting the wall, which relegated him to a 12th-place starting position.

Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing secured the pole position with a track-record lap of 1:13.2383. He will lead the field for Sunday's 90-lap race, starting ahead of Christian Lundgaard and Scott McLaughlin. Despite the chaotic start to the weekend, drivers praised the quality of the newly repaved asphalt surface.
