INE installs 32 local councils to begin 2026-2027 electoral process

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has officially begun the territorial organization for the 2026-2027 Federal Electoral Process by installing its 32 local councils across Mexico. This step marks the transition of electoral planning to the local level, with responsibilities including supervising local executive boards, designating district council members, and managing electoral infrastructure.

In various states, specific preparations are underway. In Puebla, the INE is implementing mechanisms to review candidate backgrounds for potential links to organized crime, though officials state that no specific municipalities have been identified as high-risk zones for the 2027 elections. In Yucatán, the institute projects the installation of 3,124 polling stations. In Querétaro, the State Electoral Institute has recorded 81 procedures against political actors and parties during 2026, with the State Electoral Tribunal currently analyzing between 10 and 12 complaints.

Additionally, the INE is launching training programs for electoral supervisors, assistants, and polling station officials using in-person, distance, and virtual modalities. In Veracruz, Miguel Ángel García Onofre has been appointed as the new executive vocal for the local board. INE President Guadalupe Taddei emphasized that the institution remains independent, serving the citizenry rather than political parties or government interests.
