Mexico government calls for austerity in INE and Judiciary budgets

The Mexican government is pushing for strict austerity measures regarding the 2027 federal budget, specifically targeting the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Judiciary. Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez has called for “prudence” in budget requests, noting that high-ranking federal officials will see no salary increases as part of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s austerity mandate.

The INE has approved a preliminary budget request of approximately 31.4 billion pesos for 2027. This includes roughly 14 billion pesos for operational costs and 10.8 billion pesos for the public financing of political parties. The institute also allocated funds for potential popular consultations and mandate revocations. INE officials defended the request, stating it is necessary to protect the votes of over 102 million people and cover rising costs, such as election materials.

Additionally, political parties are required to allocate 236 million pesos collectively—representing 3% of their ordinary financing—to strengthen the political leadership of women. The government intends to reach agreements with autonomous bodies and the Judiciary before the formal delivery of the economic package to Congress in September.
