INE approves expanded in-person early voting for 2026-2027 elections

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has approved an operational model for early voting during the 2026-2027 concurrent electoral process and any resulting extraordinary elections. This model focuses on in-person home visits using printed ballots to assist individuals unable to visit polling stations and their primary caregivers.

To implement this, district boards will conduct home visits from February 5 to 11, 2027, to distribute invitations and registration forms for the Early Voting Nominal List (LNEVA). The voting period is scheduled for May 15 to 26, 2027. While the INE has expanded the coverage of in-person home voting, it has ruled out internet voting for this cycle following a pilot program in Coahuila.

Debate remains among council members regarding the digital option. Some officials described the Coahuila pilot as a failed experiment that could not guarantee voter secrecy or identity, whereas others argued that abandoning the developed software (SIVEI) represents a waste of previous investments.
