Mexico electoral bodies initiate preparations for 2026-2027 cycles
Mexico is entering various stages of electoral preparation for the 2026-2027 cycle. The National Electoral Institute (INE) has opened registration for citizens to join the 300 District Councils, which are responsible for organizing and supervising elections, including determining polling station locations and overseeing counts. In Coahuila, the local INE has installed its Local Council and is working on voter registration and training to maintain high participation rates.
In Veracruz, the local electoral body (OPLE) is managing the disposal of indelible ink used in previous elections, transporting the liquid to Querétaro for environmentally safe treatment. Additionally, the INE has issued a specific call for candidates to fill vacancies in the 19 District Councils within Veracruz.
In Tabasco, the local electoral institute (IEPCT) has formally launched the 2026-2027 local electoral process. This cycle will determine 103 positions, including municipal presidencies and various legislative seats, ahead of the June 2027 elections. Meanwhile, at the national level, INE counselor Carla Humphrey has proposed officially registering the institute’s new gray graphic identity to prevent political parties from appropriating the visual branding.
