Mexico prepares for 2026-2027 electoral cycle
Mexico is undergoing various administrative and regulatory preparations for the 2026-2027 electoral cycle. The National Electoral Institute (INE) has launched several initiatives, including calls for citizens to apply for district councilor positions in states such as Michoacán, Chihuahua, and Veracruz. In Chihuahua, 36 of the 52 vacancies are reserved for women to ensure gender parity.
Regarding candidacy, the INE has opened the process for independent candidates seeking federal deputy positions, requiring signatures equivalent to 2% of the local electoral roll. Similarly, in the State of Mexico, the IEEM has outlined procedures for independent candidates to run for local deputies or municipal government roles.
In terms of oversight, the INE's Complaints and Denunciations Commission recently approved 36 draft resolutions concerning potential electoral infractions, including unauthorized party affiliations and the submission of false data. Additionally, the Observatorio Permanente de Integridad Electoral (OPINE) has released a report warning of unprecedented institutional uncertainty heading into the 2027 elections.
