Argentina and Mexico implement new electoral integrity and reform measures
In Argentina, the National Electoral Chamber (CNE) has issued an extraordinary warning to Congress regarding proposed electoral reforms. The court emphasized that structural changes to the electoral system, such as the potential elimination or suspension of the Primarias Abiertas Simultáneas y Obligatorias (PASO) sought by the Javier Milei administration, should follow international standards of timing. The CNE advised that reforms should ideally be implemented three to six months before the formal start of the electoral process to ensure legal certainty and predictability for political actors and authorities.
In Mexico, the National Electoral Institute (INE) has established the Candidacy Integrity Verification Commission to combat criminal infiltration in the 2026-2027 electoral process. Led by Arturo Chávez López, the commission will coordinate with federal agencies including the FGR, SAT, and the National Intelligence Center to review candidate profiles. The process aims to detect links to organized crime while maintaining the presumption of innocence and confidentiality. Participation in these integrity reviews remains strictly voluntary for both candidates and political parties.
