Mexico's INE implements major electoral updates for 2026-2027 cycle
Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) is implementing several major updates ahead of the 2026-2027 electoral cycle. The institute has removed over 500,000 invalid affiliations from the Morena party due to inconsistencies such as duplicate entries, deaths, and expired records. To facilitate participation for citizens living abroad, the INE will open registration on September 1, 2026, utilizing new digital tools including the “Mi INE. Mi Voto donde esté” mobile application and a renewed web portal.
In preparation for upcoming elections, the INE has approved the 2026-2027 Electoral Training and Assistance Strategy (ECAE) to coordinate the recruitment and training of polling station officials. Additionally, the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León has been selected to conduct qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the institute's institutional campaigns.
Regional electoral bodies are also advancing preparations. In the State of Mexico, the IEEM has mandated digital registration for all candidates for the 2027 elections, extending the registration period to 30 days. In Oaxaca, the IEEPCO has approved agreements to organize the 2026-2027 process and verified the compliance of local parties Nueva Alianza Oaxaca, Partido de la Transformación Oaxaqueña, and the PRD. In Querétaro, the INE is launching an intense annual credentialing campaign, while in Morelos, modules will offer extended hours to meet high demand for voter ID updates.
