INE fines Mexican political parties for unauthorized citizen affiliation
The National Electoral Institute (INE) has imposed fines exceeding 37 million pesos on political parties for enrolling citizens in their memberships without express consent. This represents one of the largest sanctions of its kind in the organization's history.
Morena received the largest portion of the penalty, totaling 36.9 million pesos. Other sanctioned parties include the Labor Party (PT), fined 133,202 pesos, and the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM), fined 70,337 pesos. The decision follows a significant surge in complaints regarding improper affiliations, which rose from 64 cases in 2018 to 1,362 reported between January and September 20, 2026.
During the General Council session, representatives from the PRI alleged corruption and blackmail involving citizens and electoral personnel to facilitate irregular enrollments, calling for a thorough investigation into the networks behind these practices.
