INE proposes media guidelines to combat electoral disinformation

The National Electoral Institute (INE) in Mexico has proposed a set of guidelines for media outlets to combat disinformation during the 2026-2027 Federal Electoral Process. The guide aims to address challenges posed by artificial intelligence, which can facilitate the rapid creation and distribution of convincing fake content that threatens democratic systems.

The recommendations for journalists include verifying the origins of information, contrasting facts with multiple sources, and distinguishing between information, opinion, and propaganda. The guidelines also cover topics such as equity between candidates, political violence, gender equality, and hate speech to ensure responsible coverage during the upcoming campaigns and elections.
