INE rejects SOMOS party emblem over national identity concerns

The General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) has rejected the proposed emblem for the SOMOS political party, granting the organization 48 hours to submit a new design. While the INE acknowledged that the party successfully modified its name, the emblem failed to meet legal requirements for institutional differentiation.

The rejection stems from a ruling by the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF). The INE determined that the proposed design, which replaced 'MX' with a map of the Mexican Republic, still utilized symbols of national identity. The electoral body noted that graphic identity cannot be neutral if it suggests national belonging, as this could provide an undue advantage over other political forces.

Additionally, the INE raised concerns regarding the party's 'complementary application' of its emblem. The proposal suggests that the color scheme remains substantially similar to that of the local political party Fuerza México, creating a risk of voter confusion. The INE maintains that party emblems must clearly distinguish political organizations from national institutions.
