INE warns Mexican political parties of organized crime risks for 2027 elections

Officials from Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) have issued warnings to political parties regarding the risk of organized crime infiltrating the 2027 electoral process. INE counselor Frida Denisse Gómez Puga emphasized that political parties hold the primary responsibility for vetting candidates to prevent criminal groups from compromising governance, security, and public trust.

To assist in this process, the INE implemented an Integrity Verification Commission in July. This mechanism establishes a confidential link between political parties and federal security and justice agencies, including the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), and the Secretariat of Security. Through this system, parties can submit lists of aspirants to request background information from federal institutions. However, the INE clarified that it will act only as a facilitator and will not independently validate criminal eligibility; the final decision to nominate or reject a candidate remains with the political parties.

Estimates suggest that between 750,000 and 800,000 inquiries related to candidates for federal, state, and municipal positions may be required for the 2027 cycle.
