İğneada flood trial: Business owner sentenced to 18 years

A court in Kırklareli has issued sentences following a retrial regarding a 2023 flood in the İğneada district of Demirköy. The flood, which occurred during heavy rainfall in the Longoz Forests, resulted in the deaths of six people staying at the Sisli Vadi bungalow facility.

The Kırklareli 2nd High Criminal Court sentenced the business owner, Bülent Bayrak, to 18 years in prison. Two other defendants received sentences of 7 years and 6 months each, while one defendant was acquitted. The retrial followed a reversal of a previous decision by the Court of Cassation.

Investigations revealed that the Sisli Vadi facility was operating without proper permits. Although a demolition order had been issued by the Special Administration, the 18 bungalows were being promoted on social media. Furthermore, the facility was registered as a 'mixed farm' for tax purposes rather than a tourist accommodation site. The prosecutor had requested that the defendants be punished for 'possible intent to kill' and 'possible intent to injure' based on the circumstances of the flood.
