Nigeria's INEC Publishes 2027 Presidential Candidate List as Parties Gear Up

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released Form EC9, unveiling the personal records, academic credentials and running mates of 19 presidential candidates for Nigeria's 2027 general election. The list includes incumbent President Bola Tinubu (All Progressives Congress) with Vice‑President Kashim Shettima, former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar (African Democratic Congress) with Rotimi Amaechi, former Anambra governor Peter Obi (Nigeria Democratic Congress) with Rabiu Kwankwaso, and PDP’s Senator Sandy Onor with Babangida Umar. The publication clears the way for campaign activities to begin on 19 August, ahead of the 16 January 2027 election.

Party leaders have reacted strongly. The APC in Kwara, led by state chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi, expressed confidence of a third consecutive victory, citing development projects in the region. The Wike‑backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party welcomed the inclusion of Sandy Onor, calling the release “vindication” that ends months of speculation and misinformation, and pledged reconciliation and unity within the party. INEC also announced a media partnership and readiness for upcoming state elections, emphasizing transparency and public scrutiny of candidates’ credentials.
