INEC plans IDP voting centres in nine Plateau State LGAs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is planning to establish voting centres for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections. Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Samuel Egwu announced the initiative during a meeting with political party leaders and stakeholders in Jos, noting that the move aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under the Kampala Declaration on Internally Displaced Persons.

The identified local government areas include Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, Kanam, Kanke, Wase, and Bokkos. Egwu explained that if security challenges prevent displaced citizens from returning to their original communities, INEC will make arrangements for them to vote at their places of displacement. Votes cast by IDPs will be collated and counted as part of their original wards and constituencies.

Additionally, Egwu raised concerns regarding approximately 95,000 uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Plateau State. He urged political parties to increase mobilization and public enlightenment efforts to ensure eligible voters retrieve their cards, noting uncertainty regarding whether many of the cardholders still reside in the state.
