INEC redeploys wife of APC campaign official to head electoral operations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has redeployed Oluyemi Adeyemi-Showunmi to head its Electoral Operations Department at the national headquarters. Previously serving as the commission’s administrative secretary in Lagos State, she replaces Isah Magaji Gummi, who has been moved to the Voter Registry Department.

The move has sparked controversy due to the professional connection of her husband, Segun Showunmi, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for President Bola Tinubu. Critics have questioned whether the appointment serves as a reward for his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Segun Showunmi has denied these allegations, describing his wife as a career civil servant and a level 17 officer who has worked with INEC since completing her National Youth Service Corps programme. He maintained that the redeployment was an internal administrative decision made by the commission and is unrelated to his political role.
