Ined study shows more equal domestic task sharing in female same-sex couples

A 2024 study by the Institut national d'études démographiques (Ined) reveals that domestic tasks are more equally distributed in same-sex couples, particularly among women, compared to heterosexual couples.

In heterosexual households, approximately 80% of couples show a gendered division of labor, with women typically handling laundry and men managing DIY repairs. In contrast, nearly one-third of female same-sex couples report an egalitarian distribution of chores. Specifically, 33% of female same-sex couples share meal preparation equally, compared to 25% of heterosexual couples, and 63% share dishwashing duties equally, compared to 48% of heterosexual couples.

The study also notes a rise in same-sex cohabitation in France. Ined estimates that 175,000 women and 210,000 men aged 18 to 79 live in same-sex couples, a figure that has more than doubled from 0.5% in 2011 to 1.3%. While female couples show high levels of shared responsibility, the findings for male same-sex couples are more varied; they report less balance in tasks like dishwashing but more sharing in areas such as DIY, laundry, and social organization.
